Safety and Etiquette Tips

If you are new to the game of bowling you may be unaware of some of the basic etiquette tips that can keep the game flowing smoothly between all the lanes as well as some basic safety guidelines that can ensure the game is fun and no injuries occur. Read on for more details on how you can get your next game started off on the right foot.

Always make sure you are aware of who is bowling first. Typically, the rule states that whoever is up first is the first bowler but this can be negotiated among the players. Never just make an assumption. If you’re not sure, ask.

Make sure you are ready to bowl. Don’t allow yourself to be caught goofing off and your turn come up and then realize that you are not prepared to take it. Avoid taking any unnecessary delays because this causes everyone else to wait as well. As soon as you’re comfortable to do so, throw the ball down the lanes.

Always show respect for all the other bowlers in the center regardless of whether they are your teammates or simply someone who happens to be bowling on the lane next to you. This means demonstrating good sportsmanship and consideration of all other players.

Take the time to learn and observe all the rules and guidelines of the game as well as the alley in which you are playing. These rules are provided to keep you and other players safe as well as foster a healthy relationship between everyone.

Always use the same ball throughout the game. This demonstrates respect to the other players. Don’t choose a ball that you know full well is already in use by another player.

While competition among players can certainly be healthy it should be accomplished in a friendly manner. Cooperate with your teammates, don’t waste time and participate in a friendly and eager fashion. If things aren’t going well for you or your team, avoid displaying fits of temper or anger. If you find that you can’t control yourself on the lanes, do everyone a favor and take a quick break.

Always pick up after yourself. Do not leave your area littered with food containers and drink containers or bottles. Throw away any trash. When you’re done with your towel or not using it, make sure it is placed either in or on the bag. Don’t leave it lying around.

To make sure that you do not incur an injury during play, make sure you take the time to perform some warm-up exercises before your game. This is important for any sport and bowling is no different. Stretching can help to prevent torn or pulled muscles.

Always make sure you are wearing proper bowling shoes. This is a rule in almost all centers and with very good reason. It prevents unnecessary slips.

Be sure to use both hands in handling the ball. Using only one hand places a tremendous amount of pressure on your back and hands. Not to mention it would just be plain uncomfortable.

Make sure you do not cross the foul line or the sides of the lane. This is important because the lane will usually be lubricated before the game. If you cross the line you could very well accumulate oil on your shoes and they will become quite slippery. This can result in a fall and possibly a serious injury.

Taking the time to understand and follow these basic etiquette and safety rules for bowling will ensure that the next time you step onto the lanes you will enjoy a run, relaxing and safe game.
